West Indies eliminated from World Cup after 7-wicket loss to Scotland, first time in 48 years

In the Super Six match of the ICC Qualifier 2023, Scotland defeated West Indies by seven wickets, causing a major upset. The West Indies team’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup were dashed by this loss. The West Indies will not participate in the World Cup for the first time in its history.

Scotland won the coin flip and chose to bowl first. The two-time world champion West Indies scored 181 runs in 43.5 overs, batting poorly. Brandon McMullen had three dismissals. Brandon McMullen (69) and Matthew Cross (74 not out) scripted the victory while pursuing the target. Scotland won the encounter by scoring 185 runs in 43.3 overs while losing three wickets.

West Indies batter didn’t do well

When batting first, the West Indies had a dismal start. Shamar Brooks (0), Brand King (22), captain Shai Hope (13), Kyle Mayers (5), and Nicholas Pooran (21) were the first to return to the pavilion. At one point, the West Indies lost six batsmen while scoring 81 runs. It appeared that the entire team would be out before 150 runs, but Jason Holder and Roman Shepherd put together a 77-run partnership to bring the West Indies to 181.

Brandon McMullen’s all-round performance

Brandon McMullen, the best player in Scotland, performed marvellously in the first bowling. The Caribbean players were sent to the pavilion by McMullen. In 9 overs, he claimed 3 wickets and allowed 32 runs. McMullen claimed the wickets of the West Indies’ first three players. At the same moment, Brandon McMullen played the game-winning innings while pursuing the target.

It should be noted that between 1975 and 1979, West Indies won the World Cup twice in a succession, achieving a unique distinction. The West Indies team has participated in each of the previous 12 World Cups; however, they will not be able to participate in the 2013 tournament. The West Indies have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 48 years.
