Andrew Balbirnie quit as Ireland’s captain for ODIs and T20 Internationals after the team did poorly in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. In Balbirnie’s place, veteran batter Paul Stirling has been put in charge of the team for the time being. The way Ireland played in the World Cup qualifiers wasn’t as good as was hoped.
Andrew Balbirnie quit as captain of Ireland in ODIs and T20 Internationals after an embarrassing showing in the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2023. In Balbirnie’s place, veteran batsman Paul Stirling has been named the interim leader of Ireland.
Balbirnie resigned his position as captain
Andrew Balbirnie said that he would step down as leader of the white ball team after the last qualifying game for the ICC World Cup 2023. Balbirnie said, “After a lot of thought and consideration, I’ve chosen to step down from being captain of the ODI and T20I teams. Over the past few years, it has been an honour to lead this team. I will always be grateful to the players, coaches, Cricket Ireland, and fans for their support, both on and off the pitch.
Balbirnie also said, “I think it’s time for me and the team for me to step down as captain. I’ll keep doing my best for the team and working hard, and I’ll do what I can in the future to help the team do well. I’ll do my best.” Andrew Balbirnie was named captain of Ireland in 2019. He led the team in four Tests, 33 ODIs, and 52 T20 Internationals.
Paul Sterling is in charge of running the team
Andrew Balbirnie quit as captain of Ireland, so Paul Stirling has been put in charge of the team for now. Sterling is one of the best batters for Ireland. So far, he has played for Ireland in 154 ODIs, 124 T20 Internationals, and 5 Tests. Sterling has made 5,598 runs in one-day internationals. At the same time, his bat has been responsible for 3,275 runs in T20 International. Sterling has made a total of 253 runs in the longest form of cricket, including a hundred.
